Antarctica
February 15th, 2011
Whew, it is cold here, but warmer than usual! We are in Antarctica and chose to go in February because this is one of the months that are part of Antarctica’s summer. Summer in Antarctica is from the end of November until March. It is always so cold here that I did not think that anything was considered a summer season here. The average temperature during the summer months is 37 degrees F, which is really not a change from the winter months from where I come from in Chicago, Illinois, but the others months are much colder and can be as low as 11 degrees F.
Today we went on an amazing tour to whale watch. We were able to see Humpback and Orcas whales! I cannot describe how BIG they were. They seemed bigger than my house! I can only imagine how much they weigh. My little brother was kind of scared, but would cheer as he saw the whales jump so high out of the water. He would say “Again! Again!” During the tour I also learned that all the water in Antarctica is from melted ice and is the purist and coldest water on earth.
After whale watching we could not forget about the penguins. Since this is the summer months here we were able to see many baby penguins. They were very cute! Because they are still babies they have grey feathers instead of their white and black feathers we are accustomed to seeing. All the penguins looked very silly when they dove in and out of the water. There is so much amazing wildlife in Antarctica; I wish we had time to see more.
Though I had a lot of fun here I hope my next adventure takes me some place warmer.
