Portugal
June 6th, 2011
Schools out! Yeah! Now there is more time to travel to another part of our world, Portugal. In Portugal we are going to visit the island on Azores and have a blast. I cannot wait until we start our adventure.
In Azores there are many festivals that take place on each of the islands. Today we are going to visit Terceira Island where one of the largest and most famous festivals takes place called Sanjoaninas. This festival has been occurring since the 16th century (a LONG time ago). The festival goes on all day so I am sure we will be experiencing a lot of culture here today.
Our first stop was to Main Street to watch the parade. People in the parade where dressed in really cool costumes that looked like they were from a very long time ago. There were horse drawn carriages, just as people would have traveled back when the parade first started. So many people lined the streets to watch the parade. There was lots of cheering and celebrating that went on as the parade went by.
After the parade it was off to walk down the main streets where there were local crafts, music, and concerts taking place. We were also very hungry so we stopped for a bite to eat at one of the food stands. YUMMY!
Each of us were excited and could not wait for where we were going after dinner. After dinner we were off to a traditional bull fight. I was very curious to see how the bull fighters get away from the bull without getting hurt. My sister was worried about the bull getting hurt. There was a lot of action and cheering for both the bull and the bull fighter. I was sitting on the edge of my seat during the whole match. I kept saying to myself “will the bull fighter get away or not?” All of the action during the match made me feel very excited. The good news is that both the bull fighter and the bull were not harmed in anyway during the match. It is all just for good entertainment.
It is late now and we have had a very busy day. More adventures await us tomorrow as we visit another island here called the island of Santa Maria, and we look forward to learning about the traditions there.
Until our next adventure!
