Uganda

January 25th, 2012

UgandaUganda is a country on the continent of Africa. Africa has a lot of countries so I have a feeling I will be traveling here often to share with you many different things Africa has to offer.

After our long plane ride we finally made it to Uganda. Uganda has some enormous mountains and water falls which are some of the scenes we are here to see. Since Uganda is in the middle of Africa is does not have access to the oceans like the Atlantic and Indian oceans that surround Africa, but they do have access to many lakes and rivers.

Today we began our outing heading to see Mount Elgon National Park to go site seeing.  We began our journey through the caves where we saw elephants that work in the caves to mine salt rocks from the cave walls. That was really cool to see an elephant in a cave!  Further down the cave it got a little darker and we had to use the lights on our hats to guide our way, we saw bats!  YIKES!  That was a little scary, but we were told if we were quiet they would not bother us.  Once we came to the end of the cave we saw the bottom of the Sipi Falls.  The Sipi Falls is an amazing waterfall that actually consists of three waterfalls that hang over the side of Mount Elgon.

It was really cool to look up and feel the water splash you as it hit the bottom.  I wanted to take a dive in a swim. When I looked up to see how high it was I could not believe it! I bet it would take few hours or longer to climb that mountain. Have you ever climbed a mountain?

Before we left Mount Elgon National Park we wanted to make sure we saw everything we could so our second site seeing journey was to walk around the park and to count and name the wild animals we spotted.  Do you want to know which animals we saw? Well, we saw quite a few. My sister spotted buffalo and blue monkeys; I spotted a leopard (which we made sure we stayed far away from), and a red-fronted parrot (way cool!), and my mom spotted an elephant, but I think she was cheating and said that since we saw the elephants in the cave earlier during the day(mom you can’t trick us!).

We were kind of worn out from all of the walking today so we decided to take a relaxing horse ride back. What a great idea because I was able to sit back and really enjoy the sites as we made our way back.

Uganda is such an amazing country. I cannot wait to come back and share more of my journeys with you.  Do you have a country in Africa you would like to visit some day?  If you’re not sure, take a look at the map and check out some of the countries of Africa!
