Greenland

May 22nd, 2011

Polar BearWe are heading north! No, not to the North Pole, but to Greenland. Do you wonder if Greenland is called “Greenland” because there is a lot of green there? I guess we will find out.

Did you know that Greenland is the largest island in the world?  From what I have learned Texas could fit in Greenland three times. Have you seen the size of Texas?! Now that is big!

I am very excited because not only is Greenland a really cool place to visit, but they also have some pretty amazing wildlife here.  It is not often that I get to see wild animals up close so my parents have agreed to go on a tour of the national park. Greenland has some pretty big things here. Not only is Greenland the largest island in the world, it also has the largest national park in the world.  Can you imagine how many wild animals live in the park?  It must be thousands!

Today’s wildlife tour was beyond words!  AMAZING! AMAZING! AMAZING!!!  We saw giant walruses whose tusks look as big as an elephants; polar bears (their paws are so HUGE!); pretty white seals; and an artic ermine, which is a weasel.  There are many others animals that live here too like caribou, the artic fox and hare, and musk ox, but we did not see them on our tour today.

It is going to be kind of hard getting to sleep tonight.  Did you know that during the summer months the sun does not go down? They call it the “Midnight Sun” and it lowers a bit but never sets. I hope we have some good shades in our room or else I might be up all night.

Tomorrow we are going to drive to see some glaciers, which are huge bricks of ice that look like mountains, and visit the native people of Greenland, the Inuit.  I look forward to learning more about their culture.

Oh, by the way, Greenland does have a lot of green land. :)
